Ecosystem Services and natural values

Services, which are supported by Earth’s ecosystems and benefit people are called ecosystem services. The three categories of ecosystem services, all of which are equally important for the health and well-being of people are: Provision services, Regulating and Maintenance services and Cultural services. In addition, although people emphasize the linkage between ecosystem and their well-being, they must always take into consideration the natural – intrinsic value of the ecosystems.

Troodos National Forest Park is an important forest ecosystem, that offers ecosystem services from all three categories, including:

  • provision of water, food, raw materials, fuel and genetic material / biodiversity (provision services)
  • regulation of climate, water and flood flow, impact on air quality, protection against extreme weather conditions and soil erosion, etc. (regulating and maintenance services)
  • provision opportunities for recreational activities, tourism, artistic inspiration, as well as a field for education and research (cultural services)

It is of high importance to ensure the conservation status of the Troodos National Forest Park since it is directly related with the provision of the abovementioned ecosystem services.
